John
Perry
Ive known John Perrys family most of
my life. John was a cop for ten years working both on the beat and as
a lawyer in the police misconduct unit at One Police Plaza.
John was a cop who did not believe in the drug
war.
He believed it was fundamentally undermining the
freedoms this country was founded upon.
When I was arrested in Washington Square Park one
fine spring afternoon for asking a cop why he was arresting a street musician
John had my hearing postponed and when it was finally held charges were
dropped.
John enjoyed playing cops on film and on television.
When I wrote a play including an arrest scene I
asked him to play the beat cop, who very ironically, in the first moments
of the play, tells a horn player, who was playing at the World Trade Center,
to move on.
A number of awards and scholarships have been established
in Johns memory.
All proceeds of the sale of Beyond the Call of
Duty will go to them.
The Libertarian Party of NY has established an
annual John W Perry Community Service Award
The DRC has started a scholarship for students
who lost theirs because of "drug" convictions
